I don't know if I ever would have imagined this image above.
I don't know if when growing up, trying to hide who I was, trying to find ways to fit in, trying to be something that I was not, that I would have ever imagined a day in which the White House of the United States would light up as a rainbow to celebrate marriage equality.
I don't know that I would have ever imagined a day in which the country watched, with bated breathe, to see if the Supreme Court would rule in favor of marriage equality.
Yesterday morning at 6:45am, I sat down at the table, coffee in hand, in front of my laptop and opened Twitter and SCOTUSBlog, waiting to see if Friday, June 26, 2015 would be the day. Waiting to see if the ruling would come down in favor of marriage equality. I sat there, shaking, anxiously waiting 7:00 am, refreshing Twitter and SCOTUSBlog...waiting.
Just after 7:00, SCOTUSBlog posted that the first case was marriage. My heart started beating fast, my body shook, my anxiety was going crazy. Next, I saw that Justice Kennedy had the majority opening and I immediately started crying. Twitter then erupted with celebration that the Supreme Court of the United States ruled 5-4 in favor of marriage equality. I cried. I smiled. I cheered. I Tweeted. I was so happy.
I then went to the bathroom where Steven was brushing his teeth, told him the news, and gave him a big hug.
Steven and I are lucky that two years prior, the Supreme Court had ruled against Prop 8, bringing marriage equality to California (again). We are lucky that we can legally marry, even before Friday's ruling. But now, that cannot be taken away from us again. Now, we can happily and proudly marry one another knowing that our friends throughout the US can do the same thing.
Yesterday was such an amazing, emotional day that I will never forget in my lifetime. Seeing my friends and family support the ruling, seeing people around the US excited, knowing our country took a huge step in the right direction... I'll never for get any of that.
Let your Pride flag fly and be happy! Thank you to everyone we love and care about for your support. I can't wait to finally say, "I do" to the man of my dreams and now know that I can say "I do" to him in all of the 50 states of the United States of America!
Love,
-D
